Roses is a song about the Rosie Jimenez, RGV native, single mother and college student who died from infection due to an illegal abortion in 1977. She is the first known casualty of Hyde Amendment, a ban on Medicaid coverage for abortion care.
lyrics
Roses
Back in 1976, options were becoming limited
They couldn’t ban the rich or the middle class person
So they specifically targeted the marginalized and the poor
*All because of the Hyde Amendment!!*
Today in the valley
This can be a nightmare
For those in poverty
Who can’t afford access to care
Thank abortion funds
Who help ease the burden
Your dollars help someone
But we need a long term solution
Chorus
We have a long way to go
To reverse these toxic bans
To ensure our health and safety
So no more lives are ever claimed
Rosie was only 27
And a single mother
Daughter of migrant workers
Almost through with college
Her whole future ahead of her
Until she became pregnant
*All because of the Hyde Amendment!!*
She could not afford a safe abortion
So she opted for risky cheaper option
Infection took her life!
She was the first casualty of Hyde
Far too high a price
Rest in power those who died!
